By Rita Ewing & Crystal McCrary
Playoffs! The New York Flyers and their management are stretched nearly to the breaking point - lose again this year and the team as they know it will be history. And what of their women?
Casey Rogers is the "captain" of the wives and girlfriends. Married to the Flyers' star forward and captain Brent Rogers, all the women look to her for friendship and advice. Gorgeous, intelligent, and the latest young star of a prestigious New York law firm - still her world is measured and defined by her husband's career. And when the pressure on the team rises to explosive levels, the task falls to Casey to make sure the other ladies don't add to the stress.
But can one woman withstand all the demands the Flyers - and Coach Mitchell's perfect and manipulative wife Alexis - have made on Casey? Her best friend, superstar singer Remy, is falling in love for the first time - with a player who would rather "hang with the boys" than be with the most talented, beautiful African-American woman in New York. Lorraine is deceptively fragile emergency room nurse who is haunted by a past she can never share with her devoutly religous husband. Trina is openly contemptuous of everyone and everything connected to basketball. Dawn is losing her fiance to the lure of rookie startdom, and Kelly refuses to accept that hers is already gone. And Casey has to keep these situations from threatening the players' total focus on the games; for to lose the championship means the team will be sold to the obscenely wealthy, racist Leonard Hightower.
Caught in the maelstrom of the highs of the games, the lows of infidelity, the screaming fans and media, the chaotic whirlwind of court action, locker room confidences, and boardroom maneuvering, Casey Rogers is a woman whose world is about to explode. When the playoffs are over, will her own complicated personal life climax in ultimate defeat, or ultimate victory?
